Bruno Neves is currently based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He studied Fine Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam (2019-2021), where he obtained a Master's degree in Fine Arts.

My artworks easily confine me to the title of painter, yet I feel uneasy about such a title, and think of myself as an imagemaker who primarily paints. What started from a desire to picture things in a realistic and figurative manner, gradually shifted to a more playful and experimental approach, where narratives concerning the tradition of not only Painting but image-making itself play a much more relevant role than do the technicalities of handling paint.

Though my work finds shape through installation, photographic collage and sound, my main medium is indeed painting. What keeps drawing me to painting - specifically oil painting -, is that this technique is still a bit of a mystery to me. Although somewhat comfortable and familiar with the medium, its complexity is still confusing enough to make me feel unsure in what I am doing. I find this feeling of uncertainty very important, as it engages me and makes me constantly question my practice, furthering new questions and giving rise to new problems to solve.

Over the past few years, my focus has gravitated towards reflecting on the ontology of images, particularly within Painting history. I'm curious to understand how the underlying assumptions, associations, and conventions of an image influence our perception of it, and how these elements mirror the context in which the image originated. This curiosity has conducted my research into various visual traditions, encompassing established cases in art history as well as emerging ones like the aesthetics of social media and AI-generated imagery. By juxtaposing these diverse visual traditions, my aim is to deconstruct the conventional notion of the visual experience, questioning and reshaping that which makes a visual tradition.

Scene at Tweebosstraat - 2023 | Oil on canvas | 120 x 90 cm | This work depicts one of the last blocks of social housing still standing in a soon to be gentrified neighborhood in south Rotterdam. I used two references of the same building and placed them next to each other to evoke the feeling that something is wrong. This is further reinforced by the awkward perspective between the two buildings and the lack of reflection in the water. Through these visual alienations, I wish to evoke feelings of temporality and instability that I associate with the housing market in Rotterdam.
The old railway I - 2023 | Oil on plasterboard | 80 x 70 cm | This painting is part of a triptych of sorts. Each painting depicts the same perspective onto downtown Rotterdam at different timestamps after the 1940 bombing. By placing these paintings next to each other, each showing three drastic moments in the city's history, I aimed to reflect on the temporality, uncertainty and flexibility of the urban landscape.
The old railway II - 2023 | Oil on plasterboard | 70 x 60 cm | Though at first glance the paintings might not make it obvious that they depict the exact same perspective over the city, there are elements which indicate this after a closer look, such as the ruins of the Laurenskerk, and the old railway which used to run above ground, crossing Blaak.

Untitled - 2023 | Oil on wood | 90 x 110 cm | This work depicts a fictional image of someone staring somewhat confused at a scale model of a new skyscraper proposal for the Coolsingel avenue in Rotterdam. Amidst the severe housing crisis that Rotterdam is currently going through, this painting echoes and gives voice to my own feelings about this topic, as it was painted while I was desperately searching for a house to live in.

Location: Hillevliet 98 3074 KA

Landscapes towards the end of the Maas is an artistic research into the urban landscape of Rotterdam. It explores various sides of the complex and ever-evolving landscape of the city, and how this landscape reflects not only the current state of the city, but also its aspirations, its past, and its people.
